Add a transition
- Find a cut: two clips on one layer, the end of one touching the start of the next.
- Right-click the cut and choose Add dissolve, or Add crossfade on a sound layer. Or pick a type from Add transition.
- Or select the clips and press Ctrl+T, the Edit menu's Add Transitions, which adds one at each cut where they touch.
A layer's menu has Add transitions at every cut, for a whole sequence of shots at once.
The types
- Dissolve
- Blends the two pictures.
- Dip to colour
- Fades through a colour, such as black or white, and back.
- Wipe
- Moves an edge across the frame, at an angle and softness you set.
- Crossfade
- For sound. Equal power keeps different sounds level through the fade; Linear suits two takes of the same sound.
Change its length
A transition shows as a band over its cut. Drag either outer edge of the band to make it longer or shorter. While you drag, a badge shows the type and the length it will set, and Esc cancels. The drag stops at the length the clips have to give.
Its settings
Select a transition to see its Transition section in the Inspector:
- Type
- Dissolve, Dip to colour or Wipe. On sound, Curve instead: Equal power or Linear.
- Duration
- Its length in seconds.
- Alignment
- Centred on cut straddles the cut. Starts at cut begins there, and Ends at cut finishes there.
- Easing
- How the change speeds up and slows down.
- Colour, Angle and Softness
- The colour a Dip goes through, and the direction and edge of a Wipe.
- Clips
- The clip that ends at the cut and the clip that starts there, each a link that selects it.
When a clip is too short
A transition needs frames from both clips. If a clip hasn't enough, the Transition section says so in a sentence and says what to do, such as "Intro is 0.6 s long, so this transition is 0.6 s; lengthen Intro to give it more." If a clip has no frames past its end, its last frame holds, and the sentence offers Starts at cut, or trimming the clip.
The default length
New transitions are one second long. To change that for the project, set a transition to the length you want and choose Use as default from its Transition actions menu. New transitions, yours and Ape's, use it from then on.
Remove one
Select the transition and press Delete, or choose Remove transition from its menu. The clips stay where they are, end to end.
